Our Projects

Creating a usable space

The Project Brief

Where to Begin

On our first visit to meet David at the property, we were presented with a space by the back door that was completely unusable. The area had been altered multiple times over the years to provide access to the rear doors, resulting in an awkward and impractical layout.

The brief was clear: with grandchildren now part of the family, the client wanted a safe and secure outdoor space where they could play and enjoy time outside.

Our solution was to create a level area across the rear of the property by raising the ground level using pitch faced buff walling. To enhance both privacy and aesthetics, we incorporated a decorative screen from Charles and Ivy. We then designed a small paved seating area for a table and chairs, complemented by a section of artificial grass, perfect for the children to play safely.

The Challenges

Overcoming the Challenges

The most significant challenge in this project was raising the ground level. This required the construction of a substantial retaining wall. Our team built this using blockwork reinforced with steel to ensure long-term strength and stability. The structure also incorporates a comprehensive drainage system, allowing water to freely escape from behind the wall and preventing future pressure build-up.

Once the wall was completed, we began backfilling the area using crushed stone to create a solid and stable base.

With the groundwork in place, we moved on to laying the paving. The client selected a beautiful sandstone paving for the seating area. During excavation, we uncovered an old millstone, an unexpected but welcome find. We decided to incorporate this into the design, framing it with a small cobbled edging to create a unique and eye-catching feature.

To complete the space, we installed artificial grass supplied by our friends at Leisure Grass. With a 40mm pile height, it offers a soft, luxurious feel underfoot while maintaining a natural, high quality appearance perfect for both relaxing and play.

The Outcomes

The Finished Result

We were really pleased with the final result.

Creating a space that is both functional and visually appealing isn’t always straightforward, but this project strikes that balance perfectly. The reclaimed millstone we uncovered during the groundwork became a standout feature within the Indian sandstone paving, adding character and a unique story to the space.

The Charles and Ivy screen provides a stunning backdrop, far more attractive than a traditional solid fence while offering more privacy than a glass screen.

To complete the job, the artificial grass delivers a soft, natural look that blends seamlessly with the rest of the design. Modern artificial turf has come a long way in recent years, and this product is a perfect example of that.

What did the customer have to say on his Google review?
