Every so often, a project arrives that pushes us beyond the everyday—and this was certainly one of them. Having worked alongside the local council for many years on a wide range of landscaping and construction projects, we’re always excited to take on new challenges. When we were approached to create a huge curved raised sleeper planter as a striking welcome feature for the newly renovated Tameside One building, we knew this would be something special. While timber sleepers are a material we know well, designing and constructing such a large-scale curved structure required careful planning, precision calculations, and a creative approach. After plenty of measuring, problem-solving, and fine-tuning, we mapped out the perfect curve, cutting each sleeper to fit seamlessly. Before installation, we assembled the full planter in our yard and even used drone footage to ensure the shape was smooth, balanced, and visually impactful from every angle.
Once the design phase was complete, the real challenge began, bringing the planter to life on site. After carefully cutting, shaping, and numbering every individual sleeper, each piece of this giant timber jigsaw was loaded onto our vehicles and transported to Tameside One for installation. Precision was key, as every section needed to be reconstructed exactly as planned to maintain the smooth, natural curve we had worked so hard to achieve. On site, we methodically rebuilt the structure, installed protective membrane to preserve the timber, and incorporated drainage channels to ensure the planter would perform as well as it looked. With the main build complete, we then worked closely alongside Garcias of Hyde, who fitted the impressive steel lettering that would transform the planter into a true landmark feature. Finally, the structure was filled with high-quality topsoil, ready for planting. Throughout the installation, the project attracted plenty of attention from passers-by, and we were proud to receive countless compliments and positive feedback from members of the public who were excited to see such a unique feature taking shape.
With the construction complete and the planter fully prepared with quality topsoil, it was time for the project to truly come to life. Working alongside Tameside Council’s gardening team, the planter was carefully filled with a beautifully selected variety of planting, transforming the large timber structure into a vibrant and welcoming feature. Positioned prominently facing the local train station, college, and council offices, the finished planter quickly became a focal point for the area and a striking first impression for visitors arriving at Tameside One. The response from the local community was incredible, with the project drawing widespread attention, praise from passers-by, and even coverage from the local newspaper. Seeing such positive feedback and knowing we had helped create a landmark feature for the town made this project particularly rewarding for our team.
