This was a great garden to be part of from start to finish.
The clients came to us with a professional design from the lovely Jo at Green and Wood garden design. You can check out Jo by clicking here.
Our clients came to us with a beautifully considered design that was both elegant and practical. It was full of lush planting and generous entertaining spaces, combining a wide variety of finishes and features. From Egyptian pavers to Italian porcelain, a real lawn to a timber pergola, and even bamboo decking, the design brought together a rich mix of materials to create a garden with real character.
We first received the designs via email, followed by a site visit to what was then a fairly standard, uninspiring back garden. The transformation required a complete reset: all existing features and surfaces were removed so that we could start from scratch. Because the project included both the front and back gardens, the early stages involved significant groundwork — including the removal of a six-inch layer of imprinted concrete.
The clients’ brief was refreshingly straightforward: “We have the design, please build it.”
With a project of this scale, the challenges weren’t limited to the physical work on site. Coordinating such a wide range of materials — from limestone to porcelain, bamboo decking to steel edging — required careful planning to ensure everything arrived at the right time. Introducing new and innovative products was exciting, but it did mean that progress had to be measured and meticulous.
We began in the back garden by stripping out the existing space and preparing the ground from scratch. At this stage, the clients also chose to upgrade their fencing, so we factored this into the early works. While we carefully set the levels and laid the groundwork, the electrician was able to run cables for the garden lighting and water feature, ensuring all the services were in place before the build moved forward.
Access is often one of the biggest challenges in garden renovations, but on this project we were fortunate to be granted use of the neighbour’s property — something that made moving materials and machinery much more straightforward.
Once the groundwork was complete, we began laying the hard landscaping. The upper patio was finished with elegant Egyptian limestone pavers, which seamlessly transitioned into Italian porcelain and on to a bamboo deck. Around the lawn, a crisp steel edge defined the planting beds and created a polished frame for the soft landscaping. Every detail, from the alignment of the paving to the precision of the steelwork, was given the time and care it deserved before we installed the beds and turf.
The front garden echoed the same design principles, with generous planting space and carefully chosen materials that created both structure and style.
After months of meticulous work, and no small amount of blood, sweat, and tears, the transformation was complete, and we handed the garden back to Jo to work her magic with the planting.
The result was nothing short of sublime. The once-ordinary space was now a true showpiece: elegant, full of character, and impossible to walk past without pausing for a second look. Neighbours and passersby frequently stopped to admire the front garden, a testament to how unique and striking the design had become.
One standout detail was the patterned porcelain beneath the black gazebo this was a personal favourite that perfectly combined style with practicality. Everywhere you turned, there was a carefully considered feature, from the crisp lines of the steel edging to the warmth of the timber pergola and bamboo decking.
It was the planting, though, that truly brought the garden to life. With Jo’s expertise, the lush, layered greenery softened the hard landscaping and infused the space with texture and colour. The end result was not just a garden, but a living, breathing extension of the home, a space to be proud of and enjoyed for years to come.
